Izat El Amoor

Izat Elamoor, from the Bedouin town of Kuseife in the Negev, is a Palestinian citizen of Israel studying for his PhD in Sociology of Education at New York University. Izat studies Palestinian LGBTQ issues with a focus on education, family life, the Palestinian Queer Movement, and LGBTQ life in the Middle East and North Africa. His specific area of concentration deals with the sociopolitical factors of LGBTQ change since the Arab uprisings of 2011. In 2011, Izat came to the U.S. on a Fulbright scholarship to teach Arabic language and culture at Brown University. He has also taught a variety of classes in the areas of gender and sexuality, cultural studies, and international education, at NYU and the University of Cincinnati. Prior to that, Izat worked as a regional coordinator of a program run by the U.S. Department of State in Bedouin Arab high schools in Southern Israel. Izat speaks Arabic, Hebrew, and English, and his work has appeared on various academic and media platforms including: Sexualities, Haaretz and The New Arab.
